The Barnoldswick-based company was sought out by the customer - a wealthy businessman with houses across the world - because he was already well aware of the quality and attention-to-detail that goes into each and every Basically Trade’s product.
MD Steve Ward explains: “The specifier for this project was also the end user. He's a long-standing trade client of Basically Trade who has now retired. A successful businessman, he owns houses across the globe and recognises quality and craftsmanship when he sees it.
“Over the years, we've worked with him on a number of projects here in the UK and so he's experienced our commitment to quality and service firsthand.
“The client approached Basically Trade to design and build a completely bespoke kitchen and bathroom that would be able to withstand the high humidity levels in Hong Kong. This meant that we needed to design the project from the 'ground up' and carefully consider how every element would function. The materials had to be chosen with a high-humidity atmosphere in mind and so we utilised specialist chipboard, high quality PUR glue, exceptional moisture-resistant paintable mdf and non-fade lacquers and paints. We were also responsible for the installation of all mechanical components and appliances.
“We won the contract because the client knew we had the technical ability to pull off such an ambitious project. It began with a simple phone call to discuss his ideas and then we kept him informed at all stages of the design using drawings and even videos to make sure every detail was correct and that we met the specification right through from concept to completion.
“The project was so high spec it took three months to complete, but it still came in on time and within the agreed budget.
“Once the units had been designed and built, we organised the shipping to Hong Kong with the help of the UKDTI and CMI logistics. We personally packed it onto special certified ISPM15 pallets, loaded it into a 40ft container and saw that it was all secured before we sent it on its way!
“We were delighted to be chosen for such a bespoke contract. It gave us the opportunity to really showcase our skills and create something completely unique for a discerning client that wanted the finest workmanship.
“It's very rare to see a small UK company such as ours exporting to somewhere like Hong Kong - it's usually the other way around! Even the container lorry driver said as much upon collection of the units.
“The pallets took 5-6 weeks to arrive in HK and the client was delighted with the finished build quality of the kitchen and bathroom. Everything was installed quickly and easily by a local company, because we had worked to very exacting standards with particular attention to precise measurements and fine tolerances.”
“I chose Basically Trade for this project because, having worked with them in the past, I knew the team was more than capable of delivering exactly what I had in mind in time and on budget.
“They certainly didn't disappoint: both the kitchen and bathroom look fantastic and I can tell from the quality that they will stay looking good and working well for many years to come.”
